I just don't want 90% of shows to never be heard. If there is instant live, or they release Live Trax etc. I would be cool with them making some more money and me looking forward to lots of shows etc.

I know its not better, but I just want to hear the shows, so if I have to pay I don't mind it. They have given us enough.

I don't have a problem paying some dough for a show I was at. Like always free is better. But reliving shows I attend are awesome. And if they come with a
price tag, I'll pay, within reason.

I don't know why everyone keeps saying they are fine with paying for them. They aren't giving us that option, so it doesn't matter if you would
mind or not.

Not 90%. More like 65%.
33 shows were taped last year. There were probably about a 100 shows (and a few you couldn't tape and not counting acoustic radio shows) AND it was a down year for taping and they took some time off. So in a normal year we probably hear a little more than a 1/3. Without the SBD it would be hearing about 10% of the shows. This goes back to my point of "if tapes are that important to you (that's the royal you, not you directly), sack up and get some gear" We
can't depend on 5 tapers in CO, OH, MD, MA, PA

about the mighty dollar.

All,
Have you read what you have written? I was laughing at some of your mentality. Be happy you had years of SBD recordings. I hear everyone complaining about having to front money now for gear. You had years of free music with your $50 recorder, actually someone elses recorder. I would take a very random guess and assume that 98% of you have never taped. I am guessing that maybe 150 of the 8833 members of OARFANS have ever tried to record. So, taking that into account, please stop your complaining. I will continue to record AUD when available, Mike will continue to record AUD when available, Ed will continue to record AUD when available, Bob will continue to record AUD when available, Stigs will continue to record AUD when available, Didya will continue to record when available, Joe will continue to record when available...should I continue? Sorry to those I didn't mention! You have to realize that alot of the individuals that used to record in the past are now older and have careers. They don't have the time to attend every show like we did in the past. Going back to the 8833 members of OARFANS. I think it might be in the bands best interest to start recording and selling the live recordings like you all mention is the reason for this happening...what basis do you have on this? I think the band would benefit greatly from it and expand their fan base even larger. The 8833 members of this board wouldn't even fill a venue today for OAR. Look at the number of people disengaged from the live recording. Congrats to OAR!!! Keep rocking and hopefully I get to make it to a few shows this year. If y'all here are lucky, I will catch a ticket to the UofI show and record my oh so horrible AUD. Maybe I will decide it is so horrible that I won't release it...come on! Chow, J |

New Taping Policy | #114 |
|
|

Hello everyone,
I want to take a moment and address the change to the band's taping policy. First off, I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has shown interest in taping O.A.R. shows and for all of you who have helped spread this band's music and message all over the world. I recognize that the band's taping community has played an integral role in the spread of the band's music and the growth of the band overall. I understand how some people are upset by this change, and, to be honest, I expected it, and I am sincerely sorry and apologize to those who feel this way. We feel that, after extensive time and thought, the mic recordings of the shows are the best representation of the experience. The notes may not be as clear and there is certainly more audience noise present, but that is truely what the experience is. When people hear these recorded shows, they not only hear the band but you the audience as well. The excitement and energy in the room is certainly a large part of the show and dererves to be heard. I can't tell you how many times I have stood on that stage and just looked out in amazement to all of you singing and reacting to what we are doing. I want people to experience what I feel and love. All of you deserve to be heard--beer bottles and all. I understand and personally feel for those of you who do not agree with the change. I have always been a fan of artists' live tapes and still get them to this day. I got a couple of Brett Dennen bootlegs not too long ago that I really dig and one bootleg from Ryan Adams never leaves my cd player. I personally have over 80% of all O.A.R. shows on tape in one form or another (I have one from 1997 on cassette that would blow your mind--or make you laugh). And time after time, I gravitate towards the ones recorded on mics. I want to stress that this is in no way the first step in scaling down the taping community's involvement with O.A.R. and it is not a directive that was passed down from the band's label and management. Everyone understands that O.A.R. is a unique band and that all situations should be treated as specific to O.A.R. The reason that we are all here today is because the band has not been afraid of doing things our way, and, most importantly, we have always been and will always be a fan-friendly band. So bring your mics and harddrives. You are always welcome. I'll see you all soon, Jerry

Jerry,
Yes, I am looking for a ticket. I am now debating if I will go now as it is approximately 3 hours from my home. I remember driving 5.5 hours to see OAR
while in college and turning around to drive back after the show. Just not as practical nor logical now that I have a career. Though, I am trying to plan
some of my business travels around a few OAR dates this tour. If I score a floor ticket I will attend as my wife will be out of town on vacation with friends.

I have an old DMB tape with a guy yelling from below the mic stand "I wanna be on the bootleg!" - still funny when I hear it today.
Jeff Reifschneider (ReifMU) used to frequent this board often, but he hasn't chimed in on this yet, so he must not be checking. I know he is selling a nice set of AUD gear for around $1000 that is more than enough to get you started, and will also produce quality recordings. If anyone else would like to hear Brett Dennen tapes, check out http://www.messagesastray.com |

Thanks for the clarification Jerry, that is all I really wanted.
I understand that the band didn't have to give an explanation, but did think that we at least deserved one. Yes, the band has been extremely generous to all of us over the years, but lets be honest, a lot of people on here have also been extremely generous to them as well, whether through taping, street teaming, taping, or whatever. This is definitely a two-way relationship, so yes I think any drastic change such as this respects at least a reason. Look at it this way. If the taping community as a whole decided one day that they were not going to tape another show, of course they would have that right and of course would not be required to give an explanation as to why. But I do believe that the band would at least want to know why, don't you? And Jerry, how about getting a copy of that tape? |
