Jack - tape some shows and quit whining. Another option would be to find me at an upcoming show and we'll talk about taping all you want.

Perosnally I like when you can hear the crowd. Not as much as bad AUD tapes, but when there's crowd noise (such as when Marc lets the crowd sing) its much
better than an SBD with no crowd noise. Its the extra like chatter and obnoxius yelling that I don't like. I think we can agree on that.

Are any SBD tapers looking to buy a rig? Mine hasn't gotten much use lately... I'll put together another thread. Looking for $1000.

I remember seeing a "loaner" taping thread a long time ago. If everybody pitched in a little bit like Bryan said then we could get some more tapes.
Of course we'd need people who knew how to tape and who we could trust with all that expensive gear.

I would put money in for sure.
I like to be close at the shows and don't want the responsibility of watching my equipment and being by the SBD. I appreciate that so much about the tapers. I even hate having my camera when I am there. I just do not see that it is a real dis-service to the band or how it could better effect the band, the label or the fans. Will LIVE album sales greatly increase? Will more people come to shows etc.? IF they do than I understand it, it is a business. I just know without the archive I would have gone to LESS shows and bought LESS things, not because of anything other than I got to hear so many different songs and versions and stories and setlists it just got be so pumped. I also know that if you asked all the fans at a typical O.A.R. show over 75% wouldn't know the archive. It only effects the "intense" fans and fans buy their own equipment and take care of the work etc. I am glad they are still allowing AUD. tape and I am sure there are reasons over my head, I just know that it changes looking forward to shows that I am NOT attending. Will I go to less shows? No. Will I not buy the album? No way. I just used to get so pumped when there would be an SBD recording of any show that I can than put on and listen to it. I would have no problem if they wanted to institute a membership fee. Maybe they could allow SBD recordings but ask people to pay some money monthly or yearly. Maybe that would put some more money in the label OR if they do the live release thing, I wouldn't mind paying at all, I understand it is about making money and good for the band. Here is hoping that we hear as many shows/songs/versions as possible! Thanks. "Things may not come when you want them to, but they will be Right On Time"- Marc Roberge

I'm going to look into getting one. I was reading up on one model before, I need to see if that was AUD or SBD now. Glad I didn't rush to buy it. What
exactly is a AUD rig? Is it just a mic you have with you or doe sit still involve pluging in and hooking it up to something.

A basic aud setup involves just mics and a recording device. Though often you'll need something to power the mics as well. Obviously as you invest more
time/money into it, more devices come into play. You seriously should start reading up on taperssection.com if you are really interested in taping. Take the time you'd usually spend here and spend it there
instead...

I think that some people may have jumped to conclusions/negativity pretty quickly here. The band has always been excessively supportive of taping and trading,
from securing the patchbox for SBD tapers to allowing rigs in "the cage". No doubt that this new policy with decrease the number of shows that get
taped at all, but there are already many many many SBD recordings available, and a decent share of shows will still be recorded AUD. Anyone who is not wrong
will agree that one good AUD is better than having a handful of SBDs.
The new policy is a bit disappointing, but there could be many legitimate reasons for this change. For example: the band is playing much larger venues than they were in the past and letting people into areas near the soundboard might not be as 'easy'; this could be a venue by venue decision, and it may make more sense to have a no SBD policy rather than figure out on a show by show basis what can be facilitated. Maybe having people tape through the SBD has caused some unneeded distractions (I can only imagine being at work with someone asking to "plug in"). Perhaps the band is going to sell more shows (like the instant recordings available at some shows). I don't know... For a band that has given a great deal to many of us over the years, I would hope that we could give them the benefit of the doubt now (though it would be nice to know why this change was made). |

The jb3 can still be used for aud taping, as can any other recorder that I can think of.

seems like all sbd recordings being banned leans towards the possibility of the "instant live" recordings being available for purchase after the
show. umphrey's does it and so do several others. if you want SBD, you're gonna have to pay for it. thing that sucks the most is that there will be no
more mixes, which i always enjoyed the most.

Sad to read this but understandable. It can be a bit difficult for the soundboard to run smoothly if lots of people are there trying to plug in, ask questions,
see if they have the right cables, etc. All that said, I'd say they probably plan to start releasing their own cds which is why they'd ban it.
Too bad, I was planning on taping the Phoenix show. Unless somebody volunteers to loan me gear that won't happen. (already own a JB3) |
