its strange not watching the Blues pick in the top 5/10......but I've read good things about Rundblad on D (compared to Mike Green), but Ponich doesnt
sound like anything special. And apparently the Blues REALLY REALLY wanted Max Tardy, who has a fantastic name
David Rundblad (#17) Brett Ponich (#48) Sergei Andronov (#78) Tyler Shattock (#108) David Shields (#168) Max Tardy (#202) |

ESPN insider:
Hockey in Yankee Stadium in 2011? ESPN The Magazine's E.J. Hradek is reporting that the NHL is eying Yankee Stadium as a venue for the 2011 Winter Classic. The game would feature the Rangers and the Capitals. And apparently Calgary is still bitching wanting a game there this coming January Blues are making steps in the right direction... Blue cut ties with injury-marred McKeeST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Blues are cutting ties with Jay McKee, buying out the final year of the defenseman's contract. The 31-year-old McKee signed a four-year, $16-million free agent contract in 2006 and was due $4 million for next season. The Blues are responsible for two-thirds ($2.64 million) of McKee's salary, which will be spread out the next two seasons. McKee, known for his shot-blocking ability, played in 158 games during an injury-marred tenure in St. Louis. He had three goals and 14 assists in three seasons. "It's not something I expected, especially after my most productive season in St. Louis," said McKee, who will become a free agent. "I understand they had a decision to make and I was one of them. "The bottom line is, I didn't fit in their depth chart and my salary was probably a hindrance to their payroll." The Blues also signed forward Brad Winchester and defenseman Mike Weaver to one-year deals worth $800,000.

Hossa to Chitown? What a freaking scary top 6 / powerplay that team can put together now.
Blues signed Conklin, I'll take it as a backup and someone to pressure Chris Mason into being a legit goalie like he ended the year....plus that means a Blues Stanley Cup appearance in the next 2 years (most likely a lose by Conklins track record) and a possible outdoor game Sedins keep their bunk beds together in Vancouver....they need to cut the cord already and split up, they're grown ass men |

I don't like the Hossa acquisition for the Hawks at all. yes, they'll have some scary-good skill players on their first few lines, but how about
leaving some future cap room for all your young talent? 5 mil a year for TWELVE YEARS for Hossa? jeez. If they want to win with this group, they're going
to have to do it in the next two years, because some of those young guys are out of town after that.
goodbye to havlat and khabibulin. who's going to be in net now for Chicago? Huet? They need a better goaltender than that if they don't want to flop come playoff time. They'll be fun as hell to watch next year, but I think they could've done a little better job than blowing their wad on Hossa. |

he's 30. i don't know how the contract is structured, but Detroit has done the same thing with Franzen (29), Zetterberg (28), and Datsyuk (who was 29
when he signed). however, Detroit has front loaded many of those deals, which is why i wonder if Chicago did the same thing with Hossa.
edit: just looked. he's due 59 mil in the first 8 years. so the last 4 years are basically caps hits under a million per season.

do you think he'll be playing when he's 40? I don't think he has that much left in the tank. He's done by the time he's 40.
my main point was that they won't be able to re-sign some of their young studs in the next few years, they don't have any decent goaltending now, and they let go one of their best players in havlat, all to sign hossa. they just signed madden from the devils. interesting. the hawks are going to be a very talented team next year.

Pat, no one knows what will happen with the salary cap. Everyone thinks it will go down, so that would make it even worse. Who knows, I like the go for broke.
Rumors are that Huet may be traded to let Crawford and Niemi fight it out in net. Lets see. I'm excited, they got a world class goal scorer signed for less
than market rate. That's ok.
I am worried about resigning the kids next summer, but it would be a marketing nightmare to lose them, so hopefully Rocky has something in mind. |

well that's exactly my point. with the young core of your franchise going on the market in a year or so, and the cap poised to go down, why sign a FA with
a big(ish) salary for a dozen year contract?
personally, I like the hawks and what they've done in the last few years, and I was hoping the goal of the franchise would be to build around Toews, Sharp, and Kane. To me, those are the guys you go after, and everyone else is expendable. But with the hossa signing, its going to be tough to keep all of those guys in the future. |

My point was that at $5 or so per, he is affordable and you are able to keep those dudes. Havlat would've been more and the plan was to keep Havlat and
resign those dudes.
The length of the deal is key because who knows what the cap will be like in 2 years let alone 5 years. I think it's exciting, and I think you'll see they work out deals to get the kids signed too. We'll see though. It's been a long time since this town was this excited. BTW Havlat agreed with the Wild! |
