yeah i've been planning to buy a JB3 once i get
some money this summer, try my hand at taping.
this may be a stupid question, but do they have JB3's at best buy or some other retail outlet, or do I have to buy one online? ----------

Iriver h340/h320 would be perfect
You can pick up a h320 on ebay for around 160 shipped install rockbox on that thing, and use the experimental builds from www.misticriver.net then you got yourself a self gain applying recorder that records in wav. and its a beast of a mp3 player. Think about that, cause i have the h340 with a 60 gig hdd and a updated battery that I plan on using to patch into the Cary show. if you have any questiong about the iriver, you can contact me, cause ill me more than glad to help |

A few pros and cons to MD that I've
experienced...
pro. Great for stealthing... relatively small and on mine, you can use a second power source of 2 AA batteries that screw onto the side. The ability to take this off makes getting the recorder into tight security venues easier. pro. its cheap con. the discs themselves get pricy when you go to a lot of shows con. you have to re-record it to your computer. Con. You need an OPTICAL OUT on the player and an Optical in on your computer! if you don't have one, you're not going to get a digital transfer and the sound will suffer. For a while I was using a stereo 1/8 jack from the line out on the MD to the Line in on my computer. It sounded fine but a few years ago I bought a MD deck on Ebay and a sound card at Best Buy... I can now record the songs optically and I didn't think it would, but it makes a world of difference. con. MDs Skip. I never had a problem with this until the last OAR show when I put my MD on the crate the patch box was on and the bass was so strong that it made my recorder skip during the louder/faster songs. That's about all I can think of for now. I think everything else has been said. --Mike |

hell.
its the aug. 02, 2006 show that i recorded with it www.archive.org/details/o...sbd.flac16 Just remember, you have to install rockbox to be able to record in WAV, cause the stock firmware doesnt do it. But its not hard, and adds a shitload of extra features, and improves the battery life if you ever need help with the rockbox/iriver, www.misticriver.net is the place., or just contact me |

If youre considering using MD you should look at
the new HIMD recorders. I have both the RH10 which was
last years model and the new RH1 which came out a few
weeks ago. Both machines record the same but the RH1
costs more and has a few extra features.
All the HIMD recorders will upload recordings to the computer via USB...its a little slow but still faster then real time re-recording. www.minidisco.com is where I bought both of my recorders. I buy discs at 1GB discs to record in PCM at www.tapewarehouse.com and regular 80 min discs to tape in HI-SP at best buy. You can erase and re-record onto MDs up to 1,000,000 times (or so Sony claims). I personally buy new discs for every show but as someone else said it does get expensive, especially the 1GB discs which run me ~$5 per disc at tape warehouse. The 80 min discs at best buy come out to about $1.60 per disc but will not record as long but still will do 2h25m in hisp which is plenty enough for just about any band. Just something else to consider since no one else has mentioned the HIMD. |

ok so i read this thread and went wow, this sounds
easy. i can do it. so i looked around my room and
realized i have everything i need already. but um kinda a
stupid question but what does a soundboard look like and
where are they usually setup??
 um and
whats a patchbox? is it needed??

The soundboard is typically in the back of the room
inside of a cage or fence.
 The patchbox is already there provided by the band, it is what you'll have to hook your device into. It looks like this:

Time to dig this thread up.
Alright last Friday I taped Rusted Root, and everything that went wrong, went wrong. So if I ask too many questions its just cause I dont wanna mess this up again. 1. Alright so I have a JB3. Can someone give me the exact name of the cable I'm going to need. I already have some XLRs but I guess some of you recomend something else. Is there a difference in quality? 2. I know when I'm doing an AUD tape, I have to mess around with gain. What should I have the level at? (11db, 12db, etc) 3. Are there any particular settings I should have the JB3 at?
