no, you don't get it. now I don't know how much the ending was changed, as rev has informed me of it just now, but that's not at all what the book is about. you're assuming you know the ending, when you do not.

i'm not assuming anything. i'm going off of what i've heard about the book (haven't read it because, like with the reason for not seeing the movie, it's too depressing). regardless of what the plot is and how the movie ends, it's way more depressing than the notebook and i'm not going to watch it or read the book.
