Moving to Chicago |
Lead | ||
|
I think there was already another thread on this, but I wanted to be sure I received the proper attention. I was recently accepted to DePaul for a MS in
Finance, and plan on moving there in the near future (ASAP, really). I'm going straight from undergrad to graduate program - so I do not have much money
saved up. More than likely, I will have to get some sort of student loans to finance this. Mainly, I am wondering where to live. I just need a 1 bedroom
apartment, and I am thinking a suburb will definitely be the way to go in order to save money. I know at least a few of you on here either live in Chicago or
are there often, and I am wondering what is the best way to finding affordable housing? Or if any of you have a basement that is sitting empty, I can come up
for an interview.
Thanks! |

do you need a one-bedroom, or would a studio do? because studios are generally cheaper.
do your math when considering whether to live in the city or downtown. are you really going to be saving that much money if you have to spend a hundred dollars (or more) in gas every month? you can ride the metra (train from suburbs to city) but depending on what burb you're in, that will cost you between 60 and 120 dollars a month as well. either way, unless you're in walking distance to school, you'll likely have to get a CTA transit card for the El and busses. That's going to set you back 80 bucks a month (if you're using it every day, just get the CTA card plus and just pay the monthly fee. its cheaper, believe me). dunno how much you're looking to spend, but it'll be hard to get a place for under 600 a month in the Depaul area, and that's going to be a small studio. you'll get cheaper prices if you move farther west. just watch out what area you settle in. or you can go all the way to the southside and take the red line all the way to depaul. i'd probably look at some of the free apartment finding services. I went through The Apartment People when I started and got a free month of rent. |

Try to avoid financing things with student loans in grad school... They'll give you a ton of extra loans if you want them, but as cheap as the interest
are, it sucks coming out of grad school with $40,000K in loans.

Dosssss, if you can complete them all and show up with your sweet mustache, we'll go ahead and round it up to 3 months. That stache is worth at least a
quarter month.

Wow. Is this a one and done challenge or do all of us have the opportunity to win free stays?
Would you give me a free night on the balcony to attempt the gallon of vodka & entire pineapple challenge? I have not heard of the mustard pie challenge, but I'm intrigued... I also hadn't heard the helmet through the garage challenge, but I have collegiate experience running around in a jock strap/crash helmet combo and think I have the necessary background to achieve this challenge. |

oh c'mon greg, is that the best you can do!
what neighorhoods would you guys recommend that would be affordable/safe? I have been looking online throughout the day, and found some pretty good looking studios for 650, but they are only 400 sq ft. I talked to the university today and they said I get a metro pass of some sort included with my tuition. Not sure what that consists of. I'm pumped about moving, just wish I had more cash reserves. The best recommendation on neighborhood receives a personalized helmet for Greg's challenge. |
