When O.A.R. decided to release "All Sides", they primarily wanted radio play and to become a more popular band (i.e. Nickelback).

I both agree and disagree. I think they put certain songs on there to get them more success, but as a whole, no I don't think that they made All Sides that
way just for that reason. They love making music, thats why they made it.

1. this thread blows
2. you are about a year late on the all sides bashing 3. this thread blows 4. 'they primarily wanted radio play and to become a more popular band (i.e. Nickelback).' - this is just a stupid comment. one thing that all bands want is to create a larger fan base ('become more popular') to share their music with. if they didn't, they wouldn't go on tour, record albums, etc. 5. radio is one of many mediums that OAR is using to draw a bigger fan base. obviously they put out this album with the intent of it ending up on the radio, because All Sides is by far their best produced album to date. you may or may not like the music, but you can't argue how well they produced All Sides 6. that being said, the main reason for recording all sides wasn't for getting radio play. it was a reason, but not the main reason. like LITE14 said, the main reason OAR does ANYTHING is because simply they love playing music and sharing it with others, regardless of how they go about sharing. 7. this thread blows |

^ Agreed. Without all the success of shattered and all sides in general, would this summer tour production have been as awesome? maybe not

Yeah, but bands should keep their same musical styles as they try to draw a bigger fan base. All Sides sounds nothing like their early albums and honestly it's a whole lot worse and not the band that I love. 5. Disagree, IBNT was produced much better, and this is completely irrelevant. 6. I guess I agree with that. Main point: They are trying so hard to increase their fanbase that they are wiling to ditch their old style of music and instead sound like a band that any 12 year old girl would fall in love with. Not the O.A.R. that most of us know and love. (Opinion) -Randall Boin |

i'm talkin about the new stage set-up, with all the new screens and stuff. Is it a coincidence that they decided to do that now or did it have something to
do with the recent success they have had

NO. I don't know where that notion came from but everyone that repeats it seems to think they have found the key to the magic kingdom for saying
"ooooh O.A.R., they just want to be on the radio".
I do not think O.A.R. makes music to get on the radio or to become more popular like nickelback. Here is why: O.A.R. built their fan base using the "Grateful Dead model", a grassroots movement spread by word of mouth, tape trading, and live shows. Bands such as Phish, Dave Matthews Band, and Dispatch have followed the same path. No promotional machine, no stylists, no one paying to get their singles in the top ten, no big record label pushing their albums. Just great music and word of mouth. I'll use Dispatch as an example to make my point here. Dispatch split up around 2002. TWO years later, 100,00 fans showed up for "the Last Dispatch". FIVE years later, they played 3 sold out shows at MSG. SEVEN years later, they sold out the Kennedy Center. Phish has seen their fans stand by them even while they were on hiatus. If Marc throws another smoke bomb at Chris' house, and O.A.R. becomes defunct tomorrow, I would bet money that any of their reunion shows would mirror Dispatch's, where fans pour from every corner of the country just to see their favorite band. Now, lets look at whats "HOT" on the radio. In the top ten we have artists like Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, and Miley Cyrus. If any of those artists were to break up and then play a reunion show five, seven years later, do you think ANYONE would go? NO! HELL NO! For the most part, the "chart toppers" are engineered, advertised and privately funded to get there. What I'm trying to say here is that O.A.R. has a very large, very dedicated fan base. A fan base that will stand by them whether they are on the radio, on the popular list, on the moon, or on hiatus. Why does O.A.R. need the radio? To get more fans to sell out their shows? . . . uhhh actually O.A.R. puts asses in the seats on their own. *Any exposure that the radio might get them would pale in comparison to the word of mouth advertising that their fans generate everyday.* If you knew the band at all, you would know that they are fiercely dedicated to music and they worked hard to achieve this level of success. If they were only in it for the radio airplay or to become popular, then they would have given up about ten years ago when they were playing small gigs night after night after night. |

Last two shows.... Did they want a few songs on the radio? fuck yes.
But you say this... I remember an interview a while back (I think with Jerry?) and the radio songs and mainstream aspect of the band was mentioned, and he said that they are
things that help them stay around longer and allow them to keep making music. If you can't respect that, then I don't know what to tell you.
Besides, I don't know about you but I rarely listen to their studio cds. I've always thought that studio releases are mainly targeted at mainstream listeners anyway, so if they want to use them to get more radio play, that's fine with me. I'll be listening to live stuff where they truly shine. |

I mean they did exactly what they wanted. Get more exposure, more people at the shows and than look. When there are 10,000 people there just look at a setlist:
Set 1: About Mr. Brown Living In The End Right On Time So Moved On Risen Dinner Last Night Tonight Conquering Fools About An Hour Ago I Feel Home & The Wanderer * Shattered (Turn The Car Around) * That Was A Crazy Game Of Poker * On My Way * Black Rock (Bongo Intro) Lay Down War Song This Town Encore: Fool In The Rain $ Love And Memories "Things may not come when you want them to, but they will be Right On Time"- Marc Roberge |

Just a few thoughts:
Looking at their biggest hit to date, Shattered, I'm embarrassed that this is what they are known for especially lyrically. The fact that they are playing older and/or rarer songs now could go to show that they may have been displeased with how all sides songs transitioned into live performances, or maybe they finally realized it was time that we saw set lists like this again. Either way i don't fault the band for becoming what they are. You cant expect them to be this talented and not progress into this area. It would have happened no matter what. I don't love or hate all sides but i feel like we could be set for a truly special live album based on their recent success. I dont really have a point but felt like contributing since i feel like there wont be any good conversations for the next month and whether or not you agree with the thread it is worth discussing and not being an ass and attacking people.

RightOnTime31 wrote:Yes, you are absolutely right. The setlists have been fantastic this year. I'm just dissapointed by the new record, it's nothing like the band that I love, but I will admit that the sets are kickass. The thing is, I'm not talking about their shows. I'm talking about their new album and how much different it is. And in my opinion it's to get radio play. Puckman751 wrote: -Randall Boin
