Saw them last night for the first time in probably 2-3 years. Although the congas and cowbell are gone, I thought they still had plenty of energy. The new
songs are fantastic live.
That's not to say that I don't get nostalgic for the old days once in a while - but they are by far, a better band now than they ever were.

So I haven't seen them live in a couple of years, and everybody is saying that their live show isn't what it used to be. What has changed exactly? I
know Steve left a long time ago. Did they get a new drummer too, or are they somehow doing a trio thing now?

They have a new drummer and a new sound. Actually, their studio sound didn't change too much, but their shows are more ... like their albums and less
go-go/party centric

Weeba summed it up pretty good. From what I've seen: new drummer, no more cowbell for Paul, no more congas for Andy, more backing vocals/harmonizing from
Jarrett and Paul, Andy primarily plays acoustic guitar... Live (and on the album, really) they are playing a lot more piano/acoustic guitar driven sounds.

But the songs, studio wise, aren't too different from COTS, and songs on Townburg or OK to Go

Exactly. I was telling them that the new album reminded me most of COTS... which is hardly a bad thing, in my opinion.
I might be the only one that thinks this, but I thought the atmosphere of their shows started changing after Steve left. I think that something had to change, or else where they were heading was not going to be pretty. I've been to a lot of shows - the majority being circa 2001-2003. Before seeing them this week (my first show in a couple years), I was a little skeptical. Loved HTY as a studio record, just wasn't sure how it was going to translate to live songs. They blew me the fuck away. I think anyone who was a fan back in the day should go check them out at least once before writing them off. I don't think everyone is going to dig their new (old) sound, but I think some people will be pleasantly surprised.

Post Steve, the shows were a bit repetitive. You could tell that before Steve left, they were heading in a good direction (Soft Water Blues, OK to Go (the
song)), similar feeling songs which appeared OK to Go (the album), like Voyager 2, Avalanche, Mason Dixon. But live, it was as if they didn't know how to
move away from the go-go party stuff and towards the current sound. I know before JP left they were putting alot into writing and you could tell by talking to
them even a couple years ago that this was coming. The "inability" to play Steve songs, coupled with a fan base that expected a certain level of
volume was definitely wearing on them.
By creating an album that wasn't a reflection on what the crowd expected, but rather a reflection of what they wanted to play (lets face it, they're not in their 20s anymore either) definitely revitalized them as well ...yell fire... |
