So now that all my summer pay checks have come in, I have decided to finally do what I've planned on doing for years and buy a guitar and try to learn how
to play. I plan on getting an acoustic but I was wondering what I should get for a first one. What should I look for/ what am I looking at for prices. I'm
really not looking for anything amazing because whether it's a good guitar or not, the music I will be playing will be pretty shitty. Any advice would be
appreciated.

Stay up until 2am and watch the Esteban infomercial.
I'm not telling you to buy his guitars, I'm just saying it's the best hour of your life. |

Atlasoar714 wrote:No...it's not a good guitar to learn on because they aren't good quality...mine had a problem on the bridge that made it to where the strings had severe rattling and made a sound that just didn't sound good... How much are you looking to spend? EDIT: by the way, I still own and play frequently my first guitar...I bought it five years ago for about $220...it's proved to be very good...it has good sound quality for a cheaper guitar...I wound up buying a Yamaha acoustic starter kit...I think the guitar is called the F-310P...I don't know if they still make it, but it's a good guitar with good quality and it's also relatively light...

Do yourself a favor and go to a guitar shop to get your first guitar. A few things to look for: solid top, straight neck, resonant body. Any GOOD guitar store
will set up their acoustic guitars, including the beginners (this means that the neck should have no bow in it, the string action is at a playable level, and
there should be no string buzz when you fret any of the strings). I would recommend Yamaha and/or Fender, but even guitar companies like Ventura put out decent
beginning guitars. Also check the local shops for used guitars in your price range. Most important thing is that you like the tone of the guitar.

Used guitars are often the better value. Sometimes you can find a mid-level ($400-600 new) guitar priced much lower. Many guitar stores don't take in used
guitars that have problems, b/c they know they just won't sell. So buying used from a reputable store really isn't risky.

We bought my 6 year old son a brand new Ibanez electric guitar. We got him a small amp and he's having a blast with it. He's been taking guitar
lessons for about 2 months now. He loves it.
